Öndunarfærakerfis refers to the respiratory system in Icelandic. This complex system is responsible for the exchange of gases, primarily oxygen and carbon dioxide, between an organism and its environment. In humans and many other animals, the respiratory system includes the lungs, airways, and associated muscles. The airways begin with the nose and mouth, leading to the pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi. These bronchi then branch into smaller bronchioles within the lungs, eventually terminating in tiny air sacs called alveoli.
Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli, where oxygen from inhaled air diffuses into the bloodstream, and carbon
