Öljynkierros, also known as the petroleum cycle, refers to the continuous process of oil formation, accumulation, and eventual depletion. This cycle is driven by geological and biological processes that span millions of years. It begins with the accumulation of organic matter, primarily from dead marine organisms, in sedimentary basins. Over time, this organic material is buried under layers of sediment, subjected to increasing pressure and temperature.

Under these conditions, the organic matter transforms into kerogen, a waxy substance. Further heating and pressure convert kerogen into liquid hydrocarbons, or crude oil, and natural gas. This generated oil and gas then migrates through porous rock layers until it is trapped in permeable rock formations sealed by impermeable layers, creating petroleum reservoirs.

The discovery and extraction of these reservoirs constitute the economic phase of the oil cycle. Humans drill into these reservoirs to extract the oil and gas for various uses, including fuel, plastics, and chemicals. As oil is extracted, the reservoir pressure decreases, eventually making further extraction uneconomical. This marks the depletion phase of the cycle. The formation of new oil reserves is an extremely slow process, taking millions of years, which highlights the non-renewable nature of fossil fuels within human timescales.
