The operation of an oil clutch relies on the hydraulic pressure generated by the transmission fluid or a dedicated oil system. When the clutch is engaged, the oil is forced into the space between the clutch plates. This oil film lubricates the surfaces, reducing wear and allowing for a smoother engagement than dry clutches. The pressure of the oil also helps to create a strong frictional force between the plates, enabling efficient torque transfer.

Oil clutches offer several advantages, including improved durability, smoother operation, and better heat dissipation compared to dry clutches. The oil's cooling properties help to prevent overheating, especially under heavy loads or frequent engagement/disengagement cycles.
