Õhutõmbed, often translated as air currents or drafts, refer to the unintentional movement of air through a building. These movements can occur in various ways, primarily through gaps and openings in the building envelope. Common sources include cracks around windows and doors, penetrations for utilities, and in older structures, porous building materials. The phenomenon is driven by pressure differences, which can be caused by temperature variations (stack effect), wind, or mechanical ventilation systems.

The presence of õhutõmbed can have several consequences. In colder climates, they can lead to significant heat loss, increasing energy consumption for heating and potentially creating uncomfortable cold spots within a building. Conversely, in warmer climates, they can allow hot air to enter, making cooling less efficient. Beyond energy concerns, õhutõmbed can also affect indoor air quality by allowing pollutants from the outside or unconditioned spaces to infiltrate. They can also contribute to moisture issues, such as condensation on surfaces, which may lead to mold growth. Identifying and sealing these air leaks, a process often called air sealing or draught-proofing, is a common strategy in building science and energy efficiency efforts. This typically involves using sealants, weatherstripping, and other materials to close off pathways for air movement.
