Óvadék is a Hungarian legal term referring to bail. It is a sum of money or other security posted by an accused person to ensure their appearance in court at a scheduled time. If the accused fails to appear, the óvadék is forfeited to the state. The purpose of óvadék is to provide a financial incentive for the defendant to comply with court orders and to prevent flight risk.

The amount of óvadék is determined by a judge and can vary widely depending on the severity of the alleged crime, the defendant's financial situation, and their ties to the community. In some cases, individuals may be released on their own recognizance, meaning no financial security is required.
