ísskáp
An ísskáp is the Icelandic word for a refrigerator. It is a common household appliance used for keeping food at a low temperature to prevent spoilage. Typically, an ísskáp consists of a cabinet with one or more doors, containing shelves and compartments for storing various food items. The interior is cooled by a refrigeration unit, which cycles on and off to maintain a consistent temperature, usually between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius. Many modern ísskáp models also include a freezer compartment, often referred to as a frystiskápur or frystir, for longer-term food preservation at much lower temperatures. The primary function of an ísskáp is to slow down the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms, thereby extending the shelf life of perishable goods such as dairy products, meats, fruits, and vegetables. They are an essential part of modern kitchens worldwide, playing a crucial role in food safety and reducing food waste.
