çounlua

Çounlua is a fictional language created for the fantasy world of Ardent Winds. It is described as the native tongue of the coastal island confederation of Lyr and plays a central role in the series' worldbuilding. The name çounlua is presented as an in-world compound derived from roots meaning light and speech, coined by the series' linguist characters.

Phonology and writing: Çounlua uses a Latin-based alphabet augmented with diacritics. The consonant inventory includes stops, fricatives, nasals, and a voiceless palatal sibilant written ç. Vowels display harmony across morphemes, and stress is phonemic, typically falling on the penultimate syllable in common words.

Morphology and syntax: The language is described as agglutinative with rich suffixal morphology. It employs a subject–object–verb (SOV) base order in many constructions, though verb-initial forms appear in poetry. Nouns carry case markers for nominative, accusative, and dative, while verbs encode aspect, mood, evidentiality, and negation through affixes and clitics.

Lexicon and documentation: Dictionaries and grammars of çounlua appear in the series' ancillary materials and in fan-made resources. In-universe texts use honorifics and register variations to reflect social hierarchy and ceremonial contexts.
