Æðastífla, also known as a blood clot or thrombosis, refers to the formation of a blood clot within a blood vessel. This clot can partially or completely block the flow of blood through the vessel. Blood clots are a natural part of the body's healing process, forming to stop bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. However, in certain circumstances, clots can form when they are not needed, leading to serious health issues.

The formation of a blood clot is a complex process involving platelets, clotting factors, and fibrin. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets aggregate at the site of injury and form a temporary plug. Clotting factors then initiate a cascade of reactions that ultimately lead to the formation of fibrin, a protein that reinforces the platelet plug and forms a stable clot.

Æðastífla can occur in both arteries and veins. Arterial clots can lead to strokes or heart attacks by blocking blood flow to the brain or heart muscle, respectively. Venous clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), typically form in the legs and can cause pain, swelling, and redness. A serious complication of DVT is a pulmonary embolism, where a clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, obstructing blood flow.

Risk factors for æðastífla include immobility, surgery, certain medical conditions like cancer and inflammatory diseases, hormonal therapies, and inherited clotting disorders. Symptoms vary depending on the location and size of the clot but can include pain, swelling, warmth, redness, or a sudden loss of function. Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. Treatment typically involves anticoagulant medications to prevent the clot from growing and to reduce the risk of new clots forming. In some cases, thrombolytic drugs to dissolve the clot or surgical procedures may be necessary.
