Ääniväriä, known in English as timbre or tone color, is a fundamental characteristic of sound that allows us to distinguish between different types of sound production, such as voices and musical instruments, even when they are producing the same pitch and loudness. It is what makes a violin sound different from a piano, or one person's voice sound different from another's.

The perception of ääniväriä is primarily determined by the complex mixture of harmonics, or overtones, present in a sound wave. While the fundamental frequency determines the pitch we hear, it is the relative intensity and presence of these higher harmonics that shape the unique sound quality. The shape of the sound wave, influenced by factors such as the material of a musical instrument, the way it is played, or the vocal tract of a singer, also contributes significantly.

Acoustically, ääniväriä can be analyzed by examining the harmonic spectrum of a sound. This spectrum displays the amplitude of each harmonic component at a given time. Differences in the distribution and strength of these harmonics create the distinct sonic characteristics we associate with different sound sources. For instance, instruments with sharp attack transients and a rich overtone series tend to have a brighter ääniväriä, while sounds with fewer or weaker overtones might be perceived as duller or warmer. The study of ääniväriä is crucial in fields like musicology, acoustics, and audio engineering for sound synthesis, analysis, and recognition.
