Äänivalli is a Finnish term that translates to "sound barrier" or "sonic barrier." It refers to the phenomenon where an object, typically an aircraft, reaches the speed of sound. As an object approaches the speed of sound, the air molecules in front of it are compressed, creating a buildup of pressure. This compression wave intensifies as the object's speed increases, leading to a significant increase in drag and a noticeable change in aerodynamic forces.

Historically, overcoming the äänivalli was a significant challenge in aviation. When an aircraft reaches this speed, it experiences buffeting and turbulence as shock waves form and detach from its surfaces. The sound associated with this phenomenon, often perceived as a "sonic boom," is the result of these shock waves propagating through the atmosphere. Early attempts to break the sound barrier were often accompanied by structural concerns and pilot disorientation.

The breakthrough in achieving supersonic flight, or flight exceeding the speed of sound, required advancements in aircraft design, including swept wings, powerful engines, and specialized aerodynamic shaping to mitigate the effects of the äänivalli. The first successful supersonic flight is generally attributed to Chuck Yeager in the Bell X-1 aircraft in 1947. Today, supersonic flight is a reality for military aircraft and some specialized civilian applications, though the sonic boom remains a consideration for overland flight.
