äänitaso is a Finnish term that translates to "sound level" or "sound intensity level." It is a measure of how loud a sound is perceived. In acoustics, sound level is typically expressed in decibels (dB). The decibel scale is logarithmic, meaning that a small increase in decibels represents a significant increase in sound energy.

The perceived loudness of a sound is not directly proportional to its intensity. Human hearing is more sensitive to certain frequencies than others, and this is taken into account in various weighting curves, such as the A-weighting (dBA), which approximates the frequency response of the human ear at moderate sound levels. Therefore, sound levels are often measured in dBA to better reflect how humans experience loudness.
