Äänikenttä refers to the spatial perception of sound. It encompasses how listeners locate and distinguish sounds in three-dimensional space. This perception is a complex interplay of various auditory cues.

Two primary cues contribute to sound localization: interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences (ILDs). ITDs are the slight differences in the arrival time of a sound wave at each ear, which helps us determine the horizontal position of a sound source. ILDs are the differences in the intensity or loudness of a sound at each ear, which also aids in horizontal localization, particularly for higher frequencies.

Another crucial factor is the spectral filtering of sound by the pinna, the visible part of the ear. The complex folds of the pinna alter the frequency content of incoming sound waves in a way that is dependent on the elevation of the sound source. The brain learns to interpret these spectral changes to determine whether a sound is coming from above, below, in front, or behind the listener. This is known as the head-related transfer function (HRTF).

The ability to perceive an äänikenttä is essential for a variety of activities, including understanding speech in noisy environments, navigating, and appreciating music. The creation of immersive audio experiences, such as surround sound and virtual reality audio, relies on carefully manipulating these auditory cues to create a convincing illusion of spatial sound.
