Äänieristysluokitukset, or sound insulation ratings, are standardized measurements used to quantify the ability of building elements to block sound transmission. These ratings help consumers and professionals compare the soundproofing performance of different materials, components, and assemblies. The primary goal is to reduce unwanted noise from one space to another, improving comfort and privacy.

In Finland, the most common rating system for airborne sound insulation is the weighted sound reduction index, denoted as R'w. This value, expressed in decibels (dB), indicates how effectively a building element, such as a wall, floor, or window, reduces the level of airborne sound. A higher R'w value signifies better sound insulation, meaning less sound will pass through the element. The R'w value is determined through laboratory measurements and is then adjusted with a correction factor, C, to account for specific types of noise spectrums common in buildings, resulting in the weighted apparent sound reduction index, R'_A,w.

Another important aspect of sound insulation is impact sound. This refers to noise generated by sources within a building, such as footsteps on a floor. The rating for impact sound insulation is the normalized impact sound pressure level, L'_n,w. This value, also in decibels, measures the level of sound transmitted through a floor to the space below. A lower L'_n,w value indicates better impact sound insulation, meaning less noise is transmitted from activities on the floor above. Similar to R'_A,w, it can be adjusted with a correction factor C_I to provide an apparent impact sound pressure level, L'_A,max,w, particularly relevant for impact sounds.

These classifications are crucial for designing spaces that meet acoustic requirements, from residential apartments to concert halls. Building codes and standards often specify minimum sound insulation requirements based on these ratings to ensure acceptable acoustic environments.
