äverbien

äverbien is a term used in linguistic discussions to refer to a subset of verbs that show a vowel umlaut in their stem in certain forms. In many Germanic-language grammars these verbs are described as ä-Verben (ä indicating the umlaut of the stem vowel). In Finnish-language texts the phrase äverbien can appear as the genitive plural of äverbi, used when discussing this class of verbs.

Morphology and patterns. In the present tense, many ä-Verben display umlaut in the second and third person singular forms. For example, fahren becomes du fährst and er fährt; laufen becomes du läufst and er läuft; tragen becomes du trägst and er trägt.
