átmehet

Átmehet is a Hungarian verb formed with the prefix át- attached to the verb menni (to go). It conveys the idea of being able to go across or to pass from one side to another. In its basic sense, the form expresses possibility or capability: someone can cross a boundary, whether physical (a border, a bridge, a street) or metaphorical (a test, a barrier). Grammatically, átmehet is the form used to denote potential mood or possibility of the infinitive átmenni.

The primary senses of átmenni (and by extension átmehet) cover both physical movement and figurative crossing. Physically, it can describe crossing from one side to the other, such as a person being able to cross a border or cross a bridge. Figuratively, it is used for passing through or succeeding in a challenge, for example passing an exam or overcoming a barrier. In ordinary speech, the simple present indicative átmegy is often used for an actual crossing, while átmehet appears when the speaker wants to emphasize that crossing could happen under suitable conditions or in hypothetical contexts. The corresponding negative and conditional forms exist (e.g., átmehetne for “could cross” in a hypothetical situation).
