Üledékkötés

Üledékkötés, also known as sediment binding or sedimentation binding, refers to the process by which loose sediments are consolidated and cemented together to form sedimentary rocks. This geological phenomenon is a crucial part of the rock cycle, transforming unconsolidated material into solid, cohesive rock formations over vast geological timescales.

The process typically begins with deposition, where particles such as sand, silt, and clay accumulate in layers, often in bodies of water like oceans, lakes, or rivers. As more sediment is deposited on top, the weight of the overlying material exerts pressure on the lower layers. This compaction reduces the pore space between sediment grains, squeezing out water and air.

Following compaction, cementation occurs. Dissolved minerals in groundwater percolate through the pore spaces. Common cementing agents include silica (quartz), calcium carbonate (calcite), and iron oxides. These minerals precipitate out of the water and crystallize in the spaces between sediment grains, effectively acting like glue to bind the particles together. Over time, this cementation transforms the loose sediment into a coherent rock, such as sandstone from sand, shale from mud, or limestone from shell fragments. The type of minerals present in the original sediment and the groundwater dictates the specific type of sedimentary rock formed.
