Üldisele

Üldisele is a small village located in the eastern part of Estonia, within the administrative boundaries of Jõgeva County. The settlement lies approximately 12 kilometres southeast of the county capital, Jõgeva, and is situated near the banks of the Pedja River, an area known for its mixed forest landscape and agricultural fields.

The name Üldisele is derived from the Estonian word “üldine,” meaning “general” or “common,” with the suffix –‑le indicating a dative case; historically the name referred to a communal area used for collective grazing and gatherings. The village was first mentioned in written records in the late 18th century, when it appeared in land registers documenting the distribution of farmland among local inhabitants.

As of the most recent census in 2021, Üldisele has a population of about 85 residents. The community is primarily engaged in small‑scale farming, forestry, and seasonal tourism, with several guesthouses offering access to nearby nature trails and fishing spots along the Pedja. The village retains a traditional rural character, reflected in its wooden farmhouses, a modest communal hall that serves as a venue for cultural events, and a small chapel dating from the 19th century.

Infrastructure in Üldisele includes a primary road connecting the settlement to the regional highway network, limited public transport services, and basic utilities such as electricity and broadband internet, which have contributed to modest population stability despite broader rural depopulation trends in Estonia.
