Üksustes

Üksustes is an Estonian noun form, the inessive plural of the word üksus, meaning “in the units” or “within units.” It is used primarily in formal or technical writing to indicate location, scope, or distribution at the level of units, rather than at the level of a single unit or of the whole.

The base word üksus has several senses: a unit of measurement or quantity; an organizational unit such as a department or division; and a single item within a larger set. The nominative plural is üksused, the genitive plural is üksuste, and the inessive plural is üksustes. These inflectional forms allow precise expression of unit-based aspects in statistics, logistics, manufacturing, and administration. For example, a report may state that “andmed esitatakse üksustes” (the data are presented in units) or that production is analyzed “üksustes jaotatult” (divided by units).

In practice, üksustes appears mainly in technical contexts. It contrasts with phrases like “ühikutes” or “ühiku kohta,” which can convey related ideas such as per unit or per organizational unit, depending on the specific framing. Because it is a specialized grammatical form, üksustes is less common in everyday language and is more likely to be encountered in statistical, regulatory, or operational documentation.
