Überwinterungsgebieten, translated as overwintering areas, are crucial ecological zones for many migratory species. These regions provide essential resources such as food, water, and shelter during periods when conditions in their breeding grounds become inhospitable, typically during the winter months. The survival of numerous bird, insect, and marine mammal populations is directly dependent on the availability and quality of these areas.

Geographically, overwintering areas can be diverse, ranging from tropical rainforests and temperate wetlands to specific ocean currents or coastal regions.
