Überdauerungsformen, a German term roughly translating to "survival forms" or "persistence forms," refers to the specialized structures that certain organisms develop to withstand unfavorable environmental conditions. These forms allow life to persist through periods of drought, extreme temperatures, lack of nutrients, or other adverse circumstances, enabling the organism to revive when conditions become favorable again.

Common examples of Überdauerungsformen are found across various kingdoms of life. In bacteria and fungi, these are often endospores, highly resistant dormant cells that can survive for extended periods. Plants, particularly those in arid or seasonally extreme climates, form seeds and tubers. Seeds contain an embryo and stored food, protected by a tough seed coat, enabling them to germinate when moisture and temperature are suitable. Tubers, like potatoes, are underground storage organs that can sprout new growth.

Protozoa, such as amoebas and ciliates, can form cysts. These are inactive, often encapsulated stages with a thickened cell wall that protect the organism from desiccation and other environmental stresses. When conditions improve, the cyst wall breaks down, and the organism resumes its active life cycle. The ability to form these specialized Überdauerungsformen is a crucial adaptation for survival and dispersal, contributing significantly to the ecological success and resilience of many species.
