Østfoldbanen

Østfoldbanen is a railway line in Norway connecting Oslo to the Østfold region. Construction began in the 1870s, with the first section opening in 1879. The line was electrified in stages, with the final section completed in 1948. It serves as a vital commuter and regional rail corridor, carrying a significant volume of passengers daily.

The main line runs from Oslo Central Station southwards, splitting into two branches. The western branch serves towns like Ski, Moss, and Fredrikstad, eventually reaching Halden. The eastern branch serves towns such as Askim and Mysen, eventually rejoining the western branch near Sarpsborg. Key stations along the route include Oslo S, Ski, Moss, Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Halden, Askim, and Mysen.

Østfoldbanen is operated by Vy, the Norwegian state-owned railway company. It is a double-track line for much of its length, facilitating higher traffic volumes and more frequent services. The line plays a crucial role in connecting residents of Østfold to employment, education, and services in Oslo, as well as facilitating regional travel within Østfold itself. Infrastructure upgrades and capacity enhancements have been ongoing to meet growing demand.
