Översvämningsvågor, or flood waves, are a phenomenon that occurs when a large volume of water is suddenly released, causing a rapid rise in water level and a surge downstream. This can happen due to various causes, including the sudden collapse of a dam, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), or even large-scale landslides entering a body of water. Unlike typical river floods that develop over hours or days, flood waves are characterized by their speed and intensity, arriving with little warning.
