Översvämningsvågor

Översvämningsvågor, or flood waves, are a phenomenon that occurs when a large volume of water is suddenly released, causing a rapid rise in water level and a surge downstream. This can happen due to various causes, including the sudden collapse of a dam, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), or even large-scale landslides entering a body of water. Unlike typical river floods that develop over hours or days, flood waves are characterized by their speed and intensity, arriving with little warning.

The destructive potential of an översvämningsvåg is immense. The sheer force of the moving water can demolish buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. Debris carried within the wave, such as trees and rocks, further increases its destructive power. The rapid inundation can also pose a severe threat to life, trapping people and animals.
