Common symptoms include bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea after consuming specific foods.

The most well-known form of EIT is lactose intolerance, which affects the digestion of lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. Other common types include:

Gluten intolerance: A reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, often causing symptoms similar to celiac disease but without the damage to the small intestine.

Fructose intolerance: Difficulty digesting fructose, a sugar found in fruits, honey, and high-fructose corn syrup.

FODMAP intolerance: A reaction to certain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, such as lactose, fructose, and fructans.

EIT can be managed through dietary changes, such as avoiding trigger foods or consuming them in smaller amounts. Some people may also benefit from over-the-counter medications or supplements, like lactase for lactose intolerance.
