Årsaksforhold, often translated as causality or causal relationship, refers to the link between an event or action and another event or outcome. In simple terms, it is the idea that one thing causes another. This concept is fundamental to understanding how the world works and is explored across various disciplines, including philosophy, science, law, and everyday reasoning.

Establishing causality is not always straightforward. A mere correlation, where two things frequently occur together, does not automatically imply a causal relationship. For instance, ice cream sales and drowning incidents might increase at the same time, but the underlying cause is likely warmer weather, not that ice cream causes drowning. Philosophers often distinguish between necessary and sufficient conditions. A necessary condition is something that must be present for an event to occur, but its presence alone doesn't guarantee the event. A sufficient condition, on the other hand, will always lead to the event, though other factors might also cause the same event.

In scientific inquiry, researchers use experiments and observational studies to try and identify causal links. Controlled experiments, where variables are manipulated, are particularly effective in isolating causal factors. Proving that a defendant's actions directly caused a harm is a crucial element in many legal cases.
