Äänitaide, or sound art, is an artistic discipline that utilizes sound as its primary medium. It encompasses a wide range of practices and installations where sound is not merely an accompaniment to visual elements but is the central focus. The origins of sound art can be traced back to early 20th-century avant-garde movements like Futurism, which experimented with noise and new sonic technologies. However, the term gained more currency in the latter half of the century with the rise of electronic music, musique concrète, and installations that moved beyond traditional musical performance. Artists working in sound art may employ a variety of techniques, including field recordings, synthesized sounds, spoken word, found objects, and electroacoustic music.

Sound art installations often transform public or private spaces, engaging listeners in unique auditory experiences.
