Äänihengitysjärjestelmän, often translated as the "vocal tract system," refers to the anatomical structures and physiological processes involved in the production of speech sounds. It encompasses the lungs, larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, and nasal cavity. The lungs provide the airflow, which is then modulated by the larynx, where the vocal cords vibrate to produce sound. This sound is further shaped by the articulators in the pharynx, oral cavity, and nasal cavity.

The process begins with exhalation, where air from the lungs passes through the trachea and into the larynx. Within the larynx, the vocal folds can be brought together to vibrate, creating voiced sounds, or held apart, allowing air to pass freely for voiceless sounds. The frequency of vibration determines the pitch of the voice.

Following the larynx, the airflow enters the pharynx, a muscular tube that acts as a resonator and a passageway. From the pharynx, the sound can travel into the oral cavity or the nasal cavity. The oral cavity contains various articulators, including the tongue, teeth, lips, and palate, which can be moved to modify the airflow and create different vowel and consonant sounds. The position and shape of these articulators are crucial for distinguishing between various speech sounds.

The nasal cavity also plays a role in speech, particularly in the production of nasal consonants like 'm' and 'n', where air is directed through the nose. The velum, or soft palate, can be raised to block the nasal passage, directing air into the oral cavity, or lowered, allowing air to escape through the nose. The interplay between these different parts of the äänihengitysjärjestelmän allows for the complex range of sounds that constitute human language.
