Äikesevihmad

Äikesevihmad, known in English as thundershowers, are a type of precipitation associated with thunderstorms. These showers are characterized by their sudden onset and often intense nature, typically bringing heavy rain, lightning, and thunder. The formation of äikesevihmad is a direct result of the atmospheric instability that fuels thunderstorms.

The process begins with warm, moist air rising rapidly through the atmosphere. As this air ascends, it cools and condenses, forming cumulonimbus clouds. Within these towering clouds, strong updrafts and downdrafts create friction and collisions between ice crystals and water droplets. This results in the buildup of electrical charges. When the electrical potential becomes too great, a sudden discharge occurs, manifesting as lightning. The accompanying thunder is the sound wave produced by the rapid expansion of air heated by the lightning bolt.

The rainfall from an äikesevihm can be substantial in a short period, sometimes leading to flash floods in localized areas. Hail, which is ice pellets formed within the turbulent updrafts of cumulonimbus clouds, can also accompany these storms. The intensity and duration of äikesevihmad vary greatly depending on the specific meteorological conditions. They are a common phenomenon during warmer months in many parts of the world.
