Äikesesüsteemi refers to a thunderstorm system, a localized storm system characterized by the presence of lightning and thunder. These systems are typically associated with cumulonimbus clouds, which are tall, dense clouds that extend high into the atmosphere. The formation of thunderstorms requires three key ingredients: moisture, an unstable atmosphere, and a lifting mechanism. Moisture is necessary for cloud formation, while an unstable atmosphere allows air parcels to rise rapidly. A lifting mechanism, such as a cold front, a warm front, or orographic lift (air forced upward by mountains), initiates the upward movement of air.

Within a cumulonimbus cloud, strong updrafts and downdrafts create a turbulent environment. As water droplets and ice crystals collide within the cloud, they acquire electrical charges. This charge separation leads to the buildup of positive and negative charges within the cloud and also between the cloud and the ground. When the electrical potential difference becomes sufficiently large, a sudden discharge of electricity occurs, which we perceive as lightning. The rapid heating and expansion of the air along the lightning channel creates a shockwave that generates sound, known as thunder.

Äikesesüsteemi can vary in intensity and duration. Some are isolated thunderstorms, while others can form in lines or clusters, known as squall lines or mesoscale convective systems. These systems can produce a range of weather phenomena, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and in severe cases, tornadoes.
