The fundamental principle involves taking a section of a stem or leaf from a healthy parent plant and inducing it to develop roots and new growth.

There are several types of ágszaporodás, broadly categorized by the age of the cutting. Hardwood cuttings are taken from dormant woody stems during the winter months. Semi-hardwood cuttings are harvested from stems that have partially matured, typically in late summer or early autumn. Softwood cuttings utilize new, flexible growth from the current season, usually taken in spring or early summer.
