zonken

Zonken is a small village situated in the municipality of Stein in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The settlement lies approximately 12 kilometres east of the city of Nijmegen and 4 kilometres west of the town of Haaren. According to the most recent census, the village has a population of around 1,200 residents. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with a number of small farms growing dairy cattle, fruit, and grain.

The earliest documented reference to Zonken dates back to the late 13th century, when it was mentioned in a charter as a toll station along a regional trade route between the rivers Rhine and IJssel. During the 18th and 19th centuries the village grew modestly, influenced by the construction of a railway line in 1869 that connected Stein to the larger railway network. The station in Zonken was closed for passenger services in the 1950s, and the building later repurposed as a community centre.

Zonken’s historic church, the Dutch Reformed church of St. Wendel, was constructed in 1836 in a neoclassical style. The church’s tower houses a bell that dates from 1723, which was reportedly recovered after being damaged during the Franco-Dutch Wars. The village is also home to a small historic windmill, De Zonneboog, which dates from the 17th century; the mill has been preserved as a monument and used for educational purposes.

The village is served by local bus routes connecting it to Stein, Nijmegen and Deventer, and cyclists can access a network of regional cycling paths that pass through the surrounding farmland. Environmental protection is a priority for the local council, as several nature reserves in the area safeguard the wetland ecosystems of the nearby Kwetezer and Blokker rivers.
