Deventer

Deventer is a municipality and city in the central-eastern Netherlands, in Overijssel province, situated on the banks of the IJssel river. It has a well-preserved historic center with medieval streets, gabled facades, and a long trading history. The municipality's population is around 100,000.

Landmarks include Saint Lebuinus Church (Lebuïnuskerk), a monumental church with origins in the early medieval era, and the Waag, a 15th-century weigh house on the Grote Markt. The historic core also contains the city hall and numerous merchant houses that reflect Deventer’s past as a Hanseatic trading center. The city was once a member of the Hanseatic League.

Cultural life includes the Dickens Festijn, a large Christmas festival with costumed performers, and the Boekenmarkt Deventer, one of Europe’s largest book markets, held annually in August.

Today Deventer has a diversified economy based on services and logistics. It is well connected by rail through Deventer Central Station, with frequent services to Amsterdam, Zwolle, and other cities, and it lies along important road routes. The city sits along the IJssel and supports river traffic, while the surrounding area features historic towns and green landscapes.
