Zwolle

Zwolle is a city and municipality in the eastern Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of Overijssel and an important regional transport and economic hub. The city lies where the IJssel river and Zwarte Water meet, and is known for its historic center formed around canals and gabled townhouses. Zwolle's origins date to the Middle Ages; it became a member of the Hanseatic League and developed as a trading town connected to northern Europe. Today it has a population of roughly 125,000–130,000 residents.

The historic core retains medieval walls and gates, including the Sassenpoort, and features a compact canal ring. The Martinikerk houses the city's landmark tower, nicknamed the Peperbus, a distinctive feature visible from much of the surrounding area.

Cultural institutions include De Fundatie, a prominent museum of modern and contemporary art, housed in a historic building with a recent annex. The city hosts the annual Dickens Festijn, when the center is transformed into a Victorian Christmas scene, attracting visitors from across the country.

Zwolle is a major rail junction and road hub in the east of the Netherlands. Zwolle Central Station provides connections to Amsterdam, Groningen, and towns in Overijssel, as well as the Hanzelijn toward Lelystad and beyond. The municipality supports higher education and research through Windesheim University of Applied Sciences and other institutions.

Notable sectors include services, logistics, and education. Zwolle’s combination of well-preserved historic architecture, cultural offerings, and convenient transport links makes it a regional center in northeast Netherlands.
