Peperbus
Peperbus is a common nickname for the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-toren, a prominent church tower located in the city of Amersfoort, Netherlands. The name "Peperbus" literally translates to "pepper box" in Dutch, a moniker attributed to the tower's distinctive, round shape and its somewhat stout appearance, resembling an old-fashioned pepper grinder. This Gothic Revival tower stands at 98.3 meters tall and is the second-highest church tower in the Netherlands, surpassed only by the Dom Tower in Utrecht. Construction of the tower began in 1444, though it was never fully completed as originally planned. The tower has been a significant landmark in Amersfoort for centuries, visible from many parts of the city and surrounding countryside. It houses a carillon with 36 bells. The tower is a popular tourist attraction, offering panoramic views of Amersfoort from its viewing platform. The nickname "Peperbus" is widely used and recognized by locals and visitors alike, often preferred over its official name.
