Windesheim

Windesheim is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located near Zwolle and is known for its historical association with Windesheim Abbey, a medieval monastery that became the cradle of the Windesheim Congregation, a reform movement within the Devotio Moderna in the 14th and 15th centuries. The abbey played a significant role in religious and educational reform in the Low Countries during that period. Following the Reformation, the site declined and most of the original buildings were eventually lost; today only fragments of the church and cloister remain, alongside a cemetery and small museum that preserves the site’s history.

In modern times, the Windesheim name lives on through Windesheim University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Windesheim), a higher education institution based in Zwolle that honors the historic abbey's legacy. Windesheim University offers a range of programs in business, technology, ICT, health care, education, and social work, and operates across multiple campuses and partner institutions in the region.

Geographically, Windesheim is a rural locality surrounded by agricultural land and small settlements. The area reflects a broader Dutch pattern in which historical religious sites have influenced local identity and the naming of contemporary educational institutions.
