Zinkdiffusieproces, also known as sherardizing, is a diffusion coating process used to provide corrosion protection to ferrous materials. It involves heating the parts to be coated in a rotating drum filled with zinc powder. The zinc powder acts as the source of zinc, and at elevated temperatures, the zinc vapor diffuses into the surface of the steel, forming a zinc-iron alloy layer. This diffusion process creates a uniform and homogeneous coating that is metallurgically bonded to the substrate.

The sherardizing process typically occurs at temperatures below the melting point of zinc, usually between 300 and 450 degrees Celsius. The rotating drum ensures that the parts are continuously exposed to the zinc vapor and powder, resulting in an even coating on all surfaces, including intricate shapes and internal bores. The resulting coating is typically a dull gray in appearance and offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, particularly in rural and industrial environments.

Sherardized coatings are known for their hardness and abrasion resistance. They do not flake or peel because the coating is an integral part of the base metal. This makes them suitable for applications where wear and tear are a concern.
