This occurs in regions north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle.

During the summer months in these polar regions, the yöttömyysjakso refers to the midnight sun, where daylight persists around the clock. This can last for weeks or even months, with the sun circling the horizon without setting. Conversely, during the winter months, these same areas experience the polar night. This is a period where the sun does not rise above the horizon at all. While there is no direct sunlight, some areas may still experience twilight for a few hours each day, providing a faint illumination.

The duration of the yöttömyysjakso varies depending on the latitude. The closer one is to the poles, the longer these periods of continuous daylight or darkness will be. For example, at the North Pole and South Pole, the yöttömyysjakso lasts for approximately six months of continuous daylight followed by six months of continuous darkness.
