In Finland, Ympäristösääntelyä, or the environmental act, establishes principles for sustainable production, information dissemination, and the responsibilities of industry, municipalities, and citizens.

Enforcement mechanisms vary but typically involve monitoring agencies, licensing procedures, public participation, and penalties for non‑compliance. Agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States or the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) oversee compliance, conduct inspections, and offer guidance to businesses and the public. When violations occur, authorities may impose fines, require remediation, or pursue civil and criminal litigation.

Environmental regulations have evolved to incorporate emerging challenges such as climate change mitigation, circular economy principles, and the precautionary principle. They are continually updated to reflect scientific advancements and societal values, ensuring that environmental protection remains responsive to current and future risks.
