ylämaan

Ylämaa is a former municipality of Finland. It was located in the region of South Karelia. Ylämaa was established in 1927 as a municipality, previously being part of the larger Lappee municipality. The name "Ylämaa" translates to "upland" or "highland," reflecting the somewhat varied terrain of the area. The municipality's population was primarily engaged in agriculture and forestry. Its geographical location was in the southeastern part of Finland, close to the Russian border.

In 2010, Ylämaa was consolidated with other neighboring municipalities to form the new municipality of Lappeenranta. This administrative change meant that Ylämaa ceased to exist as an independent political entity. The area of Ylämaa is known for its natural beauty, including forests and lakes, which are characteristic of the Finnish Lakeland. Geologically, the region is part of the Saimaa complex. The cultural heritage of Ylämaa includes a history tied to the rural life of Karelia. The church of Ylämaa, consecrated in 1932, served as a central landmark for the community. Following the merger, the administrative functions and services were integrated into Lappeenranta. The historical records and cultural identity of Ylämaa are now preserved within the broader context of Lappeenranta.
