Yliäänipamaus, also known as a sonic boom, is the sound accompanying shock waves which are created when an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound. When an object exceeds the speed of sound, it creates a disturbance in the air. This disturbance propagates as a wave. If the object is moving fast enough, these waves can merge into a shock wave.

The characteristic "boom" sound is a result of rapid changes in air pressure. As the object passes, the pressure in front of it increases sharply, and the pressure behind it decreases sharply. This abrupt pressure change is perceived as a loud noise. The intensity of the sonic boom depends on factors such as the size and shape of the object, its altitude, and the atmospheric conditions.

Sonic booms are most commonly associated with aircraft, particularly military jets and supersonic passenger planes. Spacecraft re-entering the Earth's atmosphere also produce sonic booms. While the sound itself is not inherently dangerous, the shock waves can cause minor structural damage to buildings if they occur at very low altitudes or are exceptionally intense. Regulations often exist to limit supersonic flight over populated areas to mitigate the impact of sonic booms.
