Yksivaihejärjestelmä refers to a single-phase electrical power system. In this type of system, alternating current (AC) power is supplied through a single conductor and a neutral conductor. The voltage in the system alternates sinusoidally between the live and neutral conductors. This is the most common type of electrical system used in residential and small commercial buildings for powering most appliances and lighting.

The main advantage of a single-phase system is its simplicity and lower cost compared to three-phase systems. It is sufficient for the power demands of most household appliances, such as televisions, refrigerators, and lights. The power delivery in a single-phase system pulsates, meaning the power delivered is not constant throughout the cycle. This pulsation is generally not noticeable for most applications.

Single-phase power is typically generated and distributed at lower voltages, commonly 120V or 230V depending on the region. While it serves most everyday needs, larger industrial machinery or high-demand equipment often require the more stable and powerful output of a three-phase system.
