Yhdistämismerkkejä, known in English as connecting marks or ligatures, are typographical elements used to join two or more letters or characters together into a single glyph. This practice is common in various writing systems and is employed for aesthetic, functional, or historical reasons.

In Western typography, the most well-known ligatures are "æ" (ash), "œ" (ethel), and "ß" (eszett, or sharp s). The "æ" and "œ" ligatures originated from the Latin alphabet, where they were used to represent specific sounds. The "ß" is a ligature of "s" and "z" and is still used in German orthography. Other common ligatures include "fi" and "fl", which were developed to prevent awkward spacing or overlapping of the dots and ascenders/descenders of the letters 'f' and 'i' or 'f' and 'l' respectively.

Ligatures can also be found in other scripts. For example, in Arabic calligraphy, numerous ligatures are used to create flowing and decorative script. In some Indic scripts, conjunct consonants are represented by ligatures, where multiple consonant symbols are combined into a single unit. The use of ligatures can improve readability and visual harmony in text, particularly in certain font designs or for specific linguistic contexts. While many ligatures are now automatically rendered by modern typesetting software, they remain an important aspect of the history and aesthetics of written language.
