In this sport, a competition consists of two distinct lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. The yhdistelmävedoissa refers to the total score achieved by successfully completing both of these lifts.

The snatch is a single, continuous movement where the barbell is lifted from the floor to an overhead position in one motion. The clean and jerk is a two-part lift. First, the barbell is lifted from the floor to the shoulders (the clean), and then it is lifted from the shoulders to an overhead position (the jerk). Athletes are allowed three attempts at each lift.

The weight lifted in the snatch and the weight lifted in the clean and jerk are added together to determine the athlete's yhdistelmävedoissa. This total is the primary measure of success in Olympic weightlifting competitions. Athletes are ranked based on their total combined weight lifted.
