Years 1837 was a significant period in world history, marked by various events that shaped the course of the 19th century.

In the United Kingdom, Queen Victoria ascended to the throne at the age of 18, following the death of her uncle, King William IV. Her reign, known as the Victorian Era, would last for nearly 64 years and witness significant changes in British society, politics, and culture.

In the Americas, the Texas Revolution was underway, as Texans, dissatisfied with Mexican rule, sought independence. The Battle of the Alamo, fought in March 1836, was part of this larger conflict, and although the Texans lost the battle, they ultimately achieved their goal and declared independence on April 21, 1836.

In the midst of this turmoil, the British government, concerned about the potential for American expansion into Canadian territories, dispatched the Durham Report to assess the situation. The report, released in June 1837, recommended the formation of a Natal Colony and the withdrawal of British troops from Upper and Lower Canada, effectively ending British attempts to settle and govern these regions.

Matters in the Pacific theater took a turn as the British and the Maori continued their clashes over land, with the New Zealand Wars intensifying in the late 1830s.
