Xvariable is a term used in mathematics, statistics, and computer science to denote a variable that typically represents an input or independent quantity. In many contexts, the symbol x is used as the primary independent variable. In algebra, x is the unknown in equations such as x^2 + 3x - 4 = 0. In the study of functions, a dependent outcome y is expressed as a function of x, written y = f(x); here, x serves as the input argument.
