Xenobiology is the study and creation of biological systems that operate with biochemistries distinct from those of terrestrial life, or the design of laboratory organisms that use noncanonical biochemistries. It encompasses theoretical and experimental work in astrobiology, synthetic biology, and chemical biology, including exploration of alternative genetic alphabets, nonstandard amino acids, and novel metabolic pathways. Research aims to understand the possible diversity of life in the universe and to develop tools for biological research, biosafety, and biotechnology.

In practice, xenobiology involves expanding or orthogonalizing biological information systems, such as introducing synthetic amino acids, DNA analogues, or alternative genetic codes that enable new properties or containment strategies. Experimental work often uses model organisms engineered to depend on nonstandard components, providing containment by design and enabling exploration of fundamental questions about information flow in biology.

Applications include basic research into the limits of life, production of novel biomaterials, and the development of safer biotechnologies through intrinsic containment. The field also raises ethical and biosafety considerations, including the potential dual-use of xenobiological techniques and the need for governance, risk assessment, and oversight.

Xenobiology remains largely exploratory. No natural xenobiology outside Earth is known, and most advances are in controlled laboratory settings with strict containment protocols. The concept is discussed in scientific literature and, in popular contexts, in science fiction.
