Woodrotting is the biological process through which wood undergoes decay and breakdown by various types of fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms. This process naturally occurs in environments where wood is exposed to moisture, oxygen, and suitable temperature conditions. Woodrotting plays a vital role in ecosystem nutrient cycling by recycling dead and decaying plant material, thereby enriching the soil with organic matter.

There are two primary types of woodrotting: soft rot and brown rot. Soft rot is caused by fungi that degrade cellulose and hemicellulose in the wood, often leaving behind a softened, discolored, and spongy texture. Brown rot fungi preferentially consume cellulose while leaving behind lignin, resulting in brittle, darkened, and crumbly wood. White rot fungi, another group of wood-decaying fungi, can break down lignin as well as cellulose, leading to a whitish, fibrous appearance of the decayed wood.

Factors influencing woodrotting include moisture availability, temperature, wood species, and the presence of decay fungi. Wood with higher moisture content is more susceptible to rot, which is why proper drying and treatment are essential in building and preservation contexts. Historically, woodrotting has been a concern in construction and stored timber, leading to the development of preservation techniques such as chemical treatments, drying, and controlled environments.

While natural woodrotting contributes positively to ecological processes, it can cause significant structural damage to wooden structures if unchecked.
