Wikkelfactor, the Dutch term for winding factor, is a dimensionless parameter used in the analysis of AC electrical machines and transformers to describe how effectively a winding converts magnetic flux into electromotive force (EMF).

Definition and components

The winding factor k_w is the product of two factors: the pitch factor k_p and the distribution factor k_d. Thus k_w = k_p × k_d. The pitch factor reflects the effect of coil pitch (or short-pitching) on EMF, with full-pitch windings giving k_p = 1 and shorter pitches reducing it. A common expression is k_p = cos(α/2), where α is the short-pitch angle. The distribution factor accounts for how coil sides are spread across slots; a typical form is k_d = sin(mβ/2) / [m sin(β/2)], where β is the slot angle and m is the number of slots per pole per phase. In all cases 0 < k_w ≤ 1, with k_w = 1 for an ideal, full-pitch, evenly distributed winding.

Applications and relation to EMF

The winding factor appears in the EMF equation for a winding under sinusoidal flux: E ≈ 4.44 f Φ T k_w, where E is the RMS induced EMF per phase, f is frequency, Φ is flux per pole, and T is the number of turns per phase. A higher k_w increases EMF for a given T and flux, but practical limits arise from harmonic content and mechanical constraints. Typical winding factors for well-designed windings lie roughly in the 0.95–0.98 range; values can be lower in constrained geometries or when distribution is necessary for other design goals.
