In contemporary usage, it is generally regarded as obscure, dialectal, or possibly a misspelling. Because there is no established definition, its precise meaning remains uncertain in reliable sources.

Most explainable interpretation is that werwijzen is not a distinct verb with a fixed meaning, but rather a nonstandard form related to more common Dutch verbs such as verwijzen (to refer, to direct someone to a source) or wijzen (to point, to indicate). The prefix wer- does not form a standard productive pattern in modern Dutch, which suggests that if werwijzen appears, it may reflect regional spelling, historical variant orthography, or a typographical error rather than a stable lexical item.
