Welwitschia is a unique and ancient desert plant found only in the Namib Desert of Namibia and Angola. It is famous for its incredibly slow growth and extreme longevity, with individual plants believed to live for over a thousand years, and some potentially reaching two thousand years. The plant's most striking feature is its two strap-like leaves, which grow continuously from the base throughout its life. These leaves often split and fray over time, giving the appearance of multiple leaves.

Welwitschia mirabilis, the sole species in its genus, is a dioecious gymnosperm, meaning it has separate male and female plants. Reproduction is facilitated by wind pollination and the seeds are dispersed by wind and animals. The plant has a deep taproot that can reach water sources far below the desert surface, enabling it to survive in extremely arid conditions. Its adaptation to such a harsh environment has made it a subject of significant scientific interest in the fields of botany and evolutionary biology. The distinctive appearance and resilience of Welwitschia have led to it being sometimes referred to as a "living fossil."
