Water-to-cement ratio, often abbreviated W/C, is the ratio of the mass of water to the mass of cement in a concrete or mortar mix. It is a central parameter in concrete technology because it governs hydration, porosity, strength, and durability. A lower W/C ratio yields a denser cement paste and higher potential strength, but reduces workability and the ease of compaction. A higher W/C ratio improves slump and placement but increases pore volume, reduces strength, and can raise long-term permeability and moisture movement through the hardened concrete.

Typical ranges depend on the application. Structural concrete commonly uses W/C ratios around 0.4 to 0.6 by mass; lower ratios may be used with admixtures for high-performance concrete. Mortars and stucco often use somewhat higher ratios, around 0.5 to 0.7, depending on cement type and aggregate size. In specialty concretes, very low W/C ratios are achieved with chemical admixtures to maintain workable consistency.

Control and measurement: The W/C ratio is established during mix design and is expressed as a unitless ratio by weight. It is influenced by cement type, aggregate grading, and the desired balance of strength and durability. Water-reducing agents and superplasticizers can reduce water demand while maintaining workability, enabling lower W/C values. Accurate measurement of components by mass is essential. Proper curing further develops strength and minimizes cracking, but the W/C ratio largely determines capillary porosity; changing it after mixing requires altering the mix composition.
